BRANCH EDUCATION OFFICER/CONVENOR’S REPORT 2006
Branch development is continuing at a pace. We now have quite a number of new stewards and health and safety representatives going on courses at college. We started the programme this year on a positive note with nine reps going on the annual Branch Officer training and Rotherham were possibly the most well represented branch. We still have work to do and are now in a position where people are challenging for roles as officers and filling vacant posts - the sign of an active branch. Campaigning is the central role we must continue. Issues around pensions, pay, job evaluation, etc, are all at the forefront of our minds. I have taken on the role of Pensions representative for the Branch and will be attending all meetings to ensure Rotherham plays a leading roll in the activities. I am presently undertaking the Employment Law course at Sheffield College and will be using that information to bring added value to the campaigning role to encourage participation. We continue to support wider trade union contact and I have been part of a working group to develop stronger links with all the other South Yorkshire branches in Local Government and Health. The first meeting was held in November over a weekend at Northern College and was very successful. Draft terms of reference have been written and progress is good. The main purpose is collective campaigning, giving full support to regional and national policy.
- We have a challenging year ahead.
- We must continue to develop.
- We must continue to campaign.
- We must continue to recruit new members and stewards.
- We must continue to organise.
The branch in its role of organiser, promoter, educator and campaigner, gives our members the confidence to challenge, question and develop. Mick StoweBranch Education Officer/Convenor
